A number of Makati offices, including AIM, were suspended around 4pm on June 24, 2009 because of Typhoon Feria that was expected to hit Metro Manila and surrounding provinces later that day. But the suspension of offices might have been instrumental in allowing more office workers to attend the AIM Preview slated at 5pm at the AIM campus in Makati. The number of participants reached almost 50, the highest so far in the last six months that we were offering the preview.
As in past AIM Previews, participants came from different fields and universities, and even foreign countries. Participants, though, had one thing in common – their curiosity in knowing more about AIM masteral degree programs in business and how these programs can help them move their careers forward. Others were more determined and were actually decided to pursue graduate studies in AIM, already submitting the application requirements, even without yet hearing in detail what the programs entail. One participant intimated to me that she needed the degree in order to get a good position at a domestic conglomerate where she already applied with.
W. SyCip’s Graduate School of Business Associate Dean Prof. Ricardo Lim elaborated on what was the obvious – our world is becoming more and more complicated, interconnected, and global. What are the antidotes to surging complexity? Build EQ skills, diversify, and most importantly learn to learn which means one has to become a knowledge worker and build his absorptive capacity. This is where AIM’s case method of learning comes in. Students are drilled in the Socratic Method where questions are encouraged to result to more and more questions. The emphasis is on skills rather than on knowledge, where Prof. Lim says can easily be downloaded from the internet. At AIM, students’ thinking, reasoning, and articulating skills are honed and developed.
At the end of an AIM MBA or MM program, the graduates would have developed “expanded” brains, able to absorb complex situations and offer alternative solutions.
Rey Reyes, Executive Managing Director of the Student Services, Admissions, and Registration walked the preview participants through the requirements for admission and the school year calendar.
